Mean It!

Just as we have the last three day, we are going to start with this video and song by Matthew West video – Forgiveness.

Colossians 3:12-17

We are going to break a little bit of scripture down today.  As a child of God, His chosen people, we are called to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Col. 3:12)  We are told in verse thirteen to “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.  Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

It’s no secret that we become stressed, loose sleep and our health declines when we hold on to something we were never meant to bear.  Holding on to hurt and wounded pride instead of forgiving whatever wrongdoing causes more harm than good.

Have you seen the movie Miss Congeniality?  When in the finals stages of the pageant Sandra Bullock’s character, Gracie Hart, is asked “What is the one most important thing our society needs?”  She answers, “World Peace” after her harsher punishment comment.  Yes, I am picturing the scene as well (you can view the clip here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3st-Hai1y54).

I want peace.  You want peace. We all want peace.  It is so nice to just be at peace.  Did you know that you find peace when you truly forgive?  When you really mean it?  It’s true.  A heavy weight is gone when you finally let go of whatever transgression was brought upon you.  Verse fifteen of Colossians three says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.”  This is the peace found when you exercise verse thirteen and forgive whatever grievance against you, but you must meant itMean it!  As in, you do not take up that hurt again.  You leave it at the feet of Jesus.  I know you will never forget what has happened, but you move beyond the hurt and pain and into peace.  Must you be best friends? No.  Must you learn to cohabitate? Yes.  Must you know what it means to have compassion for them? Most Definitely.

You only get this peace when your forgiveness is true and meaningful.  This is not me giving you a step-by-step guide of how to get peace.  This is the Word of God.  His instructions to all members of the body of Christ.  This is His guide, not mine.  To be His holy and dearly loved people He asks us to have compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience and without forgiveness we can have none of these things.  Unforgiveness is not compassionate.  Unforgiveness is not kind.  Unforgiveness is not gentle or patient.  It is the opposite of all those things and that is why He says to “forgive whatever grievance you may have against one another.”

This is your chance now.  No public declaration is needed.  It is a heart issue.

Further Scriptures to meditate on:  1 Kings 8:50, Luke 11:4, John 20:23
